Homework is assigned Monday through Thursday of each week. There will also be some long-term projects assigned during the course of the year. Homework in science and social studies will mainly be limited to long-term projects. Each student will be responsible for maintaining a weekly homework sheet that he/she will receive on Monday of each week.
As a rule, each student is required to read for at least 30 minutes each school night. Of course, additional nightly reading and weekend reading is highly encouraged. Most of the nightly reading will be student-choice. However, there will be occasions when I assign a specific genre for student reading. Students will test on their book and complete a daily reading response.
Math homework will generally be assigned Monday -Thursday. For the most part, the math homework will be a reinforcement of what was taught in class; however, there may be occasions when assignments will be made for review or formative purposes. Also, beginning later in the quarter, I may be including Math Superstars as part of my math instruction. If so, I will provide additional information about that program at a later date. Math Superstars is a math enrichment activity that encourages development of mathematical thinking skills. I am currently working on how that program can be coordinated with the new Common Core State Standards.
Writing homework will mainly consist of spelling. There might be occasions when students will need to complete a classroom writing composition assignment at home, but for the most part, writing composition will take place during class.
Nightly homework is reviewed and discussed in class, but not graded and returned. All long-term projects will be presented to the class and graded.
